It is currently 6:30 pm and this is the scene behind me. I know ..what more could a girl ask for. All and all a pretty good week. My first ever museum exhibit is opening on Thursday at the Oregon Historical Museum. It is called "Great Athletes, Great Oregonians" It is what it is. I only had a few weeks to put it together. So my life has been busy writing mini bios about people, cataloging some of their objects, setting up cases. It is not the most thought provoking exhibit but it is what it is. I am surprised that I was able to pull anything together in that amount of time. I got to pull in some Massachusetts with some Red Sox and Celtics. It is featuring Bobby Doerr and Johnny Pesky for baseball, and Mel Counts and Danny Ainge for basketball.
I decided that I wanted to work in museums when I realized that I got to A. touch things B. write on them. For example not only has someone picked up the Mona Lisa but also wrote a very tiny number on it.
Mostly I want to be a Registrar. I don't want to do exhibits. I just want to organize things and make sure they are staying safe from light and people and acidic environments ect...
But ..I work in a very small museum. I have to do a lot of things I don't want to do... like answer the phone and take messages and be in charge of membership. After September 25th (a big gala that I am also working on) I am going to try to work on the skills I want to use in the future. I just bought a book called " Registration Methods for the Small Museum" I am going to memorize it..and put it to use. October should be more fulfilling than this week... and I am looking forward to it.
